6 mm: diameter and why quality matters

Almost every replica on the market fires BBs with a nominal diameter of 6 mm (there's an 8 mm standard too, but it's marginal). Yet if you look at a serious product listing, you'll often see 5.95 mm mentioned: that's the real diameter of precision BBs. This slight "undersizing" is deliberate. It leaves just enough clearance in the barrel and hop-up rubber to avoid excessive friction, while keeping the trajectory consistent.

Where it all comes down to it is consistency. A quality BB is perfectly spherical, smooth and free of moulding marks (people call them "seamless" BBs, meaning no seam or flashing). Premium makers hold tolerances of around ±0.01 mm, versus ±0.02 mm or worse for entry-level. In practice, two quality BBs leave the barrel exactly the same; two cheap BBs don't — and your shot grouping opens up.

Quality isn't just about accuracy. A bad BB also means:

  • Jamming: a deformed or oversized BB gets stuck in the barrel or the mechanism.
  • Breakage: a porous or brittle BB splits on firing and leaves residue (debris and dust) inside.
  • Wear: that residue and those surface defects damage the hop-up rubber and inner barrel, which lose performance over time.
Bottom line: a few extra euros on a bag of BBs from a recognized brand buys you accuracy and a preserved barrel. It's the best value-for-money in your whole loadout.

Weight: the real performance factor

At the same diameter, BBs come in a wide range of weights, typically from 0.20 g to 0.40 g for everyday use (and up to 0.43–0.48 g for heavy precision shooting). It's the setting that changes your shooting behavior the most.

The principle is simple: a heavier BB is harder to deflect. So it's:

  • More stable in flight, since it's less affected by turbulence and wind;
  • More accurate at medium and long range, especially with a well-tuned hop-up;
  • Slower at the muzzle (it stores the same energy but with more mass), but it holds its speed better over time, giving better effective range.

Conversely, a light BB (0.20 g) leaves faster, gives a flat trajectory at short range and suits quick reactions… but it gets deflected by the slightest gust of air and loses accuracy quickly beyond a few dozen meters. That's the whole art of the compromise: too light and it sprays everywhere; too heavy for your power and the BB lacks the energy to carry, while the hop-up struggles to "lift" it.

Good to know: the more powerful your replica, the better it can make use of a heavy BB. A weak replica loaded with very heavy BBs will shoot short and "drop off." You have to match the weight to the power.

Which weight for your game and power

No dogma, just solid reference points. Here are the weights generally recommended based on your play style and the type of replica. Treat these values as indicative: hop-up tuning and BB quality count as much as the number.

If you're starting out with an AEG and don't want to overthink it, 0.25 g is the safest default, and 0.28 g as soon as you play mostly outdoors. You'll fine-tune later by testing. One useful reminder: BB weight also affects how impacts feel — heavier and faster hits a bit harder, which is exactly why you should respect minimum engagement distances.

Biodegradable BBs: eco-friendly (and often required)

A single airsoft game means thousands of BBs sent out into nature. Multiply that by every player and every outing, and it adds up to a lot of plastic left on the ground. Hence the rise of biodegradable BBs ("bio").

Unlike regular plastic BBs, quality bio BBs are made from polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic derived from corn starch. Under the effect of moisture and soil micro-organisms, they break down over time instead of sitting in the environment for years. The actual breakdown time depends heavily on conditions (moisture, temperature, exposure) and BB quality: marketing claims vary enormously from one maker to the next, so take them with caution.

Two things to know before you buy:

  • Often required at the field: no universal law mandates them, but many outdoor fields (woodland, natural settings) require them in their rules. Always check with the organizer before your game.
  • Equivalent performance: a bio BB from a good brand shoots just as well as a regular plastic BB. The price gap has shrunk a lot. That said, a cheap bio BB is still a bad BB — the quality rule applies just the same.
Watch your storage: bio BBs are more sensitive to moisture than regular BBs. Keep them in their airtight container and avoid stockpiling huge quantities over several years.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Cheap BBs: poorly calibrated, rough or brittle, they jam, break and wear out your hop-up and barrel. The ultimate false bargain.
