Torn between green gas or CO2 for your pistol or GBBR? And that HPA everyone talks about — what's it actually for? Three systems, three philosophies: soft, easy gas, the punchier CO2, and ultra-consistent compressed air. In this guide, we explain how each system works, its strengths, its limits, and above all which one fits your style of play. The goal: to help you choose with full knowledge, without damaging your gun or getting your budget wrong.
How does an airsoft propulsion system work?
The principle is always the same: a gas (or air) under pressure is released all at once to push the BB down the barrel. What changes from one system to another is the nature of the fluid, its pressure and how it's stored. And those differences have very concrete consequences on the field: perceived power, cold-weather performance, maintenance, budget… and your gun's compatibility.
One quick reminder before we get into the detail: whatever the system, the muzzle energy you're allowed is capped by your local regulations, and those limits vary from one country to another. You don't choose a system to hit harder, but for the feel, the consistency and the comfort of use.
Green gas: the gentle one that maintains itself
Green gas is the great classic of gas guns. Chemically, it's essentially propane with a small amount of silicone oil added (and often an additive to soften the smell). That oil is a real bonus: with every shot, it lubricates the seals and mechanics of the magazine and the gun. In other words, green gas maintains your gun a little while you play.
On the pressure side, green gas runs at around 115 to 150 PSI at room temperature (about 20 °C). That's a moderate pressure: the action is soft, it's kind to the mechanics and the kick stays pleasant without being brutal.
Its strengths
- Gentle on the gun, with built-in lubrication thanks to the silicone.
- Easy to refill: you top the magazine back up in a few seconds.
- Cheap to run and available everywhere.
Its real limit
Green gas is sensitive to cold. Its pressure depends directly on temperature: when it's cool out, the pressure in the magazine drops, shots weaken and the gun can stop cycling properly. Below 10 °C, it quickly becomes a pain. That's the compromise you accept with gas.
CO2: the punchy one that likes the cold (but hits hard)
CO2 is stored in small capsules (often 12 g) housed in the magazine or the stock. Its big difference is pressure: where green gas caps out around 115–150 PSI, CO2 works at about 700 to 800 PSI in the magazine. That's far higher.
The direct consequences: a punchier shot, a more pronounced and satisfying kick, and above all much better performance in cold weather than green gas. If you often play in winter and want to keep that punch, CO2 is an ally.

- More punch and a more realistic kick.
- Better behaviour in cold weather than green gas.
- More consistent power from one capsule to the next.
Its trade-offs
- High pressure: more wear and a compatibility requirement (see the box).
- Capsules to replace, and not to leave under pressure for too long.
- Often restricted to dedicated "CO2" magazines, not interchangeable with gas.
HPA: the consistency champion
HPA (High Pressure Air) takes a completely different approach. Here there's no gas in the magazine: the gun is fed compressed air from an external bottle (3000 PSI in aluminium, 4500 PSI in carbon) connected by an air line. Between the two, a regulator lowers that huge pressure to a level the gun's engine can use — often in the region of 80 to 120 PSI.
The result is remarkable stability: the muzzle velocity varies only minutely from one shot to the next, and because compressed air is insensitive to temperature, performance stays identical whether it's blazing hot or a freezing early morning. It's also finely adjustable: you tune the pressure to dial in your power precisely (always within your local energy limit).

- Near-perfect consistency from one shot to the next — ideal for accuracy.

Its trade-offs
- High upfront investment (HPA engine, bottle, regulator, air line).
